I've been using W&N paints for many years and remain a fan. However, I'm just a bit puzzled why all the paints (gouache and watercolour, at any rate) are now manufactured in France. I don't recall seeing any announcement of this happening. When did the transfer happen and more to the point, why - and what will happen to the prices/availability after Brexit?

Lovely soft pigment - great mixer

A glorious slightly turquoise sky blue that also mixes lovely natural greens for foliage and countryside.

A bright, light turquoise that granulates well and also has plenty of opacity when required.

The loveliest of all Cobalt Violets available. Delicately pink with a hint of mauve, and enough opacity to granulate beautifully.

This is a beautiful, darkest of blues indigo without the dull black tones I have found other brands can have. Lovely sheen of gum arabic when used opaquely.

Labelling not very clear. Paint is excellent.

[My rating of one star is for the pan, NOT the colour. The colour (in a tube) gets 5* from me] Much easier to work with (Non-nuclear) compared to Phthalo green IMO. I have also had bad experience with the W&N pans of Viridian - Absolutely washed out and insipid I now buy the tubes and put this into the pan and let it harden (Do it in around 3 or 4 goes to avoid it cracking) - Do this and you will have a lovely single pigment green for mixing.

This is good value for money but there is a weak spot in the design where the top section is soldered to the leg section. The strength here is very variable and I have twice before had to scrap an easel when the solder has given way

Other makes of Cerulean are often dull and too green. This is useful for mixing wonderful greys mixed with Burnt Sienna.

French Ultramarine is a colour that I often use, and W&N's is intense and bright.

I always use W&N watercolours as they are consistently good. They have a good intense colour and when diluted, as for instance when apply washes or working wet into wet, still retain their colour and luminance

The feeling of the paint directly out of the tube is somewhat dense to the touch, evidence of the high pigmentation of the watercolor. In addition, you can see that the pigment is well bonded to the binder and there is no evidence of separation.

Fabulous paints but what idiot designed the silver tubes (14ml) in which you need a magnifying glass to read what colour they are? Apparently W & N are aware of this problem and will produce more suitable tubes in the future.

As usual paint quality of W and N is excellent. However, what have they done with the packaging??!! The tubes are now a shiny metal finish with the information and colour sample printed on. Ok I can tell that the colour is red, blue or yellow but the printing is so tiny I cannot read the colour name! Do they not realise that their core customers must all be of advanced years and will probably have eyesight to match? Bad move!

A lovely transparent, warmish, pale yellow. Makes a cool orange with Aliz. crimson

A great idea with this large tube offering a cost saving for such a such a colour that is used in bulk by many artists..

The new tubes are dreadful even though (I hope!!!) the contents remain the same. The colour shown on the outside is so small that if the tube is not facing directly upwards, all the tubes look the same. The writing on the tube is so small as to be unreadable. lets get back to the original tube design. Much much better.

The most luminous tourquoise I've tried

W&N colours are always excellent but the new packaging, with tiny print on a silver background, makes it well nigh impossible to read the colour name. The colour bands alone are not enough to tell the difference between (for instance) two yellows. Really annoying and suggests that the packaging was designed with no thought for the people actually using the product.

As a landscape artist, this is a colour I wouldn't be without, and it would be equally useful for botanical studies or still life. A mellow browny violet, this is a luminous shadow colour, which creates depth without descending into muddiness.

I've tried various makes of this landscape essential, and came back to W & N as the best transparent, glowing autumn colour. However I was very disappointed with the tube colour which sets hard and dry in paintbox pan. Not so the manufactured full pan version. A quick spray of water and it releases rich colour each time.

I thought this might just be 'another yellow', but bought it on a friend's recommendation as a mixing colour, to make up a mini field kit of just three primaries. I have found it a remarkable 'all rounder' yellow which produces good oranges, greens and greys. Much more versatile than Lemon or Cadmium.

I'm not going to repeat my comments as this applies to all of the products bought. These are professional products using the correct pigments. As such the depth and concentration is excellent, when compared to the cheaper amateur "hue" products which are not always a proper pigment

I ordered from Jackson's art supply because I couldn't find the color I was looking for in the U.S. for some reason. Jackson's Art Supply had the color and it was a larger tube then I can normally find.

When I first used it just a clearish liquid came out not proper paint I have not tried it since, but will return if not correct

The Winsor and Newton colours suit me just fine, and in the past the tubes have been excellent. This time, though the tubes from this last batch of colours ordered (see also below) seem to have been pre-squeezed and large amounts of pigment rushed out of the tube in a blob, where I only needed very small amounts.

I missed that this is a hue, meant to order Daniel Smith which is genuine. Confusingly, W&N acrylic Quinacridone Gold is genuine single pigment. It is a pretty good match, though.

I use relatively few multipigment watercolour paints, as I tend to make my own mixtures, but this one, which is a mix of three pigments, I find convenient for some of my landscape work. It is in fact wrongly described by W&N because quinacridone gold pigment, a throw up from the car industry, is no longer generally available. More correctly it is \"quinacridone gold hue\"

Insipid, look nothing like it does in the colour sample on screen. I bought a 24 colour set (from a different supplier) and the viridian was so weak it was unusable so I bought a half pan from here and it's just the same. All the other colours are fine but this one is so awful I'm using the one from my Cotman set..

Bright and intense color, good for using on its own or mixing with dark browns to create neutrals.

A staple color for me.W &N are my favorites; good quality at reasonable price.

This is a lovely transparent yellow. When used with French Ultramarine the results are fantastic.

I have used Winsor and Newton watercolours for many years as a professional painter, however, the colours have changed substantially over the last few years and they are poor now compared with then.

Very nice transparent colour!

Just the dark green I needed for mixing my own blacks and for shaded areas of certain kinds of foliage

First time I have used Jackson's, excellent service and product.

Good quality, good colour, good solubility and saturation.

A truly gorgeous colour! Dries a little bit duller if applied in thin washes but if you go for more opaque applications, it retains all it's vibrancy. Great oranges when mixed with yellows too.

Beautiful paint, in a very convenient size, too!

I agree with the another reviewer. The paints are superb but whoever designed these dreadful silver tubes needs sacking at least. The colours on the tubes are useless as many look the same as others. The name of the paints are of such small lettering that I find I need a magnifying glass to read them if in unsuitable light. This review applaies to all the silver tubed paints 5ml.

Just a note to say that Windsor & Newton are aware of the problem with the 14ml silver tubes and they will be changed in the near future. Good on them for recognising the problem.

Can hardly see what colour it is when you pick up the tube....you dont want to be first searching for a magnyfying glass to see what colour youv'e picked up

This is a great colour by Winsor and Newton, this colour has a deep depth and I love it. The whole Winsor and Newton range is great for new artist and professionals like myself, try it, it maybe more expensive but if you want those professional looking paintings you will not be sorry.

Weapons grade red orange. Too bright for me, prefer cadmium orange.

I find most yellows of whatever hue to be too bright. W&N I think are the only major brand to use this pigment (PY216) and it produces a lovely subdued yellow similar to Transparent Yellow but without the gummy texture of that paint. Great for flesh and sappy greens that won't look radioactive.

Not a real Quninacridone Gold (PO49) but a convenience mixture containing Transparent Yellow (PY150). Unfortunately this is no substitute for the real thing having Transparent Yellow's same sticky texture and leaving all your flesh tones looking like the model is suffering from jaundice. Great for mixing up greens, but if that is all it's to be used for why not get a convenience green (Hookers/Sap/Olive)?

Lovely orange earth colour. Great for flesh and landscape (or flesh in a landscape?).

Never fulfilled it's promise. Should be a nice 'primary cyan' type blue, but is just dingy and drab. Red shade handles better but is too close in hue to the violet blues to make it worthwhile. Be daring and get the startling Manganese Blue and mix it with your other blues to 'pull' them over to the green side of the colour wheel.

Weapons grade red orange, one of the brightest pigments around. Too much for me, I prefer cadmium orange.

An amazing pigment (PY129). A great base for mixing all kinds of interesting greens with earths, reds, blues and other greens! Also in thin washes produces a dark yellow (if such a thing exists) where the green is hardly noticable.

A convenience hue made from two pigments. Quite weedy, doesn't give intense tints. Try replacing with a true single pigment Quinacridone Gold (PO49) which gives almost the exact same hue, but is capable of creating much stronger tints - Daniel Smith do one, but it only comes in tubes.

For years, and probably like most other watercolourists, I've had both French Ultramarine and Cobalt Blue in my palette and never known why - both granulating violet blues right next to each other on the colour wheel. Have got rid of both of them and replaced with this. It doesn't granulate though, but I prefer my paints that way.

Awful, practically insoluble, mine went straight in the bin. Maybe the tubes are better, but avoid the pans at all cost!

But you didn't supply the Winsor & Newton's French Ultramarine. For some reason you substituted Daler Rowney's product without asking and whilst it was slightly higher value for the same price, it seemed very high handed of you.

The product itself is fine- that's why I buy it- but the new packaging of W &N paint is a disaster. Whatever possessed a (presumably) visually aware company to label watercolour, gouache etc in identical tubes, with such poor, small labelling?

Good paint marred by dreadful reproduction of colour on paint tubes. The old tubes were much more user friendly because you could easily see which was which.

I don't know enough (in fact anything) about paint technology but this paint won't mix properly with the water. It lies gritty on the bottom of the water jar and when I scrape it up and apply it it's uneven and gritty. Not suitable for my purpose which is painting 3d paper flowers.

The parcel arrived after 20 days..... and some tubes were almost damaged as the tubes were squeezed. Instead of putting 1 tube per compartment like Winsor and Newton does you have 2 tubes per compartment .... plus the boxes are very light card. Please change the way you do your parcel especially when travelling to a remote country like New Zealand. Thanks

Overall the service was excellent and I will be using Jackson's Art supplies in the future. The website wasn't as user friendly as I would like. I needed 15 specific watercolor paints and the search field didn't work so I had to scroll through the huge quantity that Jackson's has to find each paint color. Then the checkout procedure seemed to stall for 20 minutes and suddenly my basket was empty without me knowing if the transaction had gone through! It took another couple of hours to receive an email saying the transaction had actually gone through. Other than that, I'm completely happy with the level of service I received.
