Covering Power
Covering Power not only comes from pigment strength, but also from the greater thickness of color, which results from the stiff consistency associated with Winsor & Newton's Artists' Oil Color. Covering power is particularly linked to the most opaque colors like Titanium White and the Cadmiums.
Pigment Purity
Like all raw materials, pigments are available in various grades. We use only the purest of pigments ensuring the cleanest, brightest colors, which in turn produce the best color mixtures.
Winsor & Newton's quality standards include the use of single pigments wherever possible to create individual colors. Combined with strength of color, single pigments provide a wide color range in themselves and offer cleaner, brighter mixtures with an infinite range of hues. This is particularly important for greens, violets and oranges. Single pigment 'secondaries' considerably broaden the artists' available spectrum. There are 80 single pigment colors in the range.
Color Series
As the cost of the pigments used varies, so does the price charged for the color. Therefore Winsor & Newton have grouped colors together in 'series'. The higher the series number, the higher the price. You can find the series number both on the color chart and on the tube.
Transparency & Opacity
Pigments vary in their transparency by nature. On the Winsor & Newton Artists’ Oil Color chart, the transparent colors are marked with the letter 'T', and the semi-transparent colors with 'ST'. The relatively semi-opaque colors are marked with 'SO' and the opaque colors are marked with 'O'. Remember that the level of transparency of a color is relative to other colors. Transparent colors are used for glazing and tinting, providing optical color mixtures and depth of color to the painting surface. Opaque colors cover well, give flat areas of color and obscure the under-layers of the painting. Winsor & Newton Artist Oil Color is formulated to reflect the characteristics of each of the various pigments, ensuring that synthetic organics such as Phthalocyanines and Quinacridones (ie. 'Winsor' or 'Permanent colors') deliver maximum transparency, whilst Cadmiums and Earth colors offer excellent opacity.
Viscosity/consistency
The buttery consistency of Artist Oil Color, together with the smell of linseed oil, are the two characteristics most admired by oil painters. The stiff consistency of Winsor & Newton colors can retain brush or palette knife marks or it can be thinned to the very finest of glazes. While Artist Oil Color is formulated to provide as even a reflective surface as possible, it's important to note that the reflective quality of the oil film is affected by a wide variety of factors. Because each pigment requires differing volumes of oil in formulation, the surface sheen may differ from color to color. The addition of solvent and the use of additive mediums will alter surface sheen as well as the ground used.
Permanence
Since 1832 Winsor & Newton have been developing permanent alternatives for the less durable traditional colors, without compromising the handling properties of their oils. As a result, the permanence of the color range as a whole has been greatly improved. All colors are classed as 'permanent for artists' use' (AA or A ratings from Winsor & Newton) which results in the longevity of paintings. Although Alizarin Crimson is only given a 'B' rating (moderately durable), it has been part of Artists' Oil Color for over 130 years and is still considered a key color by many contemporary artists.
Drying Times
The long drying time of Winsor & Newton Artist Oil Color is a key feature of oil painting. The color remains soft and wet for a few days and therefore allows alterations to be made from day to day. All colors will become touch dry in thin films in 2-14 days. The different reaction of each pigment when mixed with oil results in the different drying rates. Each color is individually formulated to optimise its drying rate, which helps artists to avoid the problems of slow drying underlayers. However, the following list is a guide to the likely variations.
Fast Drying Colors, dry in around two days: Permanent Mauve (manganese), Cobalt Blues, Prussian Blue, Raw Sienna, Umbers, Flake, Foundation and Cremnitz Whites.
Medium Drying Colors, dry in around five days: Winsor Blues and Greens (phthalocyanines), Burnt Sienna, Cobalt Greens and Violet, Ultramarine Blues, Mars colors (synthetic iron oxides), Sap Green, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Ochres, Cadmiums, Titanium White, Zinc White, Lamp Black, Ivory Black, Pyrrols, Bismuth Yellow, Perylenes.
Slow Drying Colors, dry in more than five days: Winsor Yellows and Orange (arylides), Quinacridones, Alizarin Crimson.
Liquin Original is the perfect medium to speed the drying time of oil color. It will speed the drying by approximately 50%.

I've found this to be the best cad yellow deep - strong colour - high pigment content - makes really moody greys when mixed with ultramarine and white
Review
Is the closest you can get to the real flake white
Review
Good value!
Review
Only downside is that they don't do oil based printing (ie etching and relief) inks / paints.
Review
Have only used it twice so far but seems to be a good starter for skin tones.
Review

A bit disappointed that it has to be used transparently to get what i want, I'm looking for a thick bodied warm yellow.

Always use this green for landscapes as can produce so many natural colours from it on its own and in mixes. Only draw back is not opaque.
Review
I have no problems with these paints and they are exactly what I was hoping for to paint my skies, they have fulfilled expectations perfectly
Review
A beautiful colour that is very subtle. Mixed carefully - as it's not a strong colour - it's a very good landscape green

Not a lover of W&N
Review
apart from the tube caps which are too small and difficult to unscrew. As a result I am now leaning toward Rembrant as a first choice as their caps are excellent to unscrew.
Review
Brilliant paint
Review
Lovely soft creamy Cotswold stonet tone to this paint that will save a lot of mixing to get this tint.
Review
I LOVE this colour!!
Review
A fabulous dark where a 'black' is required, but also 'dilutes' down to replace ultramarine in dark mixes.
Review
I assume this is a replacement for the 'old fashioned', lead containing Chrome green which I still have, in good condition, from years ago. It is the quality expected from this firm. Psssst! I still have Flake White too!
Review
Same product I always use as it is the best
Review
W&N artists oil colours always perform well

Review

I e-mailed in advance for advice on this product and the advice lead me to exactly what I needed so I am a happy customer!
Review
I would be happier if they produced this colour in larger tubes. At present only available in the smallest size.

It is very transparent but fine for what I wanted.

Review
Excellent service arrived very fast
Review
Wonderful colour. Pure joy to use just like the other W&N oil colour I have
Review
I tried this heritage colour out of curiosity, as very few demonstrators seem to use it, and I am glad that I did. It has a lovely, slightly orange hue to it, not as bright as the cadmiums but that is the point, it can be used thinned down as a good glaze, and is far better in landscapes than cadmiums as it makes an excellent range of greens in a more naturalistic manner. A very useful addition to the palette, and when choosing just one yellow for a limited palette for a field trip or short holiday, this is it, because it is so versatile. Love it.
Review
This is a very bright pigment and very useful for so many applications. A little goes a very long way.
Review
Excellent transparency making for a really good glazing colour for some large areas of vegetation and animals, and it is maybe like an orange/red transparent version of light red if that makes sense, but obviously nowhere near as powerful. It is a very useful colour and it seems to be unique.
Review
I think that this version of CY Medium is the best on the market: not too orangey, and has a lovely glow to it.
Review
I find this far more versatile than Cadmium Red Light and its got the usual Cadmium coverage and a great mixer for oranges.
Review
I have used different whites including Michael Harding's, but I always come back to this white for it's covering power. The best in my honest opinion.

My favourite deep red
Review
Always a good, reliable product.
Review
A remarkable, subtle colour which has extended the possibilities of an earthy palette that has always had difficulties with the more prismatic yellows. A Moderate to slow dryer - I'd love W&N to include this pigment in their Griffin Alkyd range!

Review
Service rating : Excellent website and very good swift service Product : This was part of a present to a 99 year old artist sonI cannot personally comment on individual paints but he was thrilled.
Review
My go-to white! Love the consistency and covering power of this pigment.
Review
If you're thinking of purchasing this, you should be aware that while it is a beautiful colour, the paint is very transparent and doesn't seem to contain much pigment and is easily lost when mixing, meaning that you are likely to use a lot of it. It's probably best applied pure for shadows, etc.
Review
Good value, quick and helpful.
Review
Paint brushes had no plastic tube protectors to ensure hairs remained in shape. Big mistake that needs to be rectified for fine and very small size brushes - particularly water colour.
Review
always a first class service

I paid for next day delivery. The delivery company lost my parcel. It arrived five days later, long after the datevI needed it. I was not refunded the extra charge I paid for the next day delivery. Terrible terrible service.
Review
Generally very good but some canvases (Jackson's own) from previous order have been poor - the frames twisted on a couple making one impossible to use. Very annoying. I don't want to waste money that way so may well shop elsewhere for my canvases in future.

Good materials, reasonable prices and fast dispatch...site easy to navigate.
Review
Very good. Was given courtesy call by JA to indicate delivery may be late because of Christmas post, but it was still prompt and met all expectations. There is a heck of a lot of packaging for such small items, but I except that this is necessary to stop paint oozing out in the event of damage...!
Review
because not other company has these orange.
Review
Very prompt delivery, goods were well packed.
Review
My preferred way to use Jackson's is using Ebay for small regular orders. Their prices are competitive and service is efficient.
Review
Really happy with everything
Review
As always
Review
I would like your description of products to tie in with the manufacturer. I illustrate my point below: W & N artists canvas board: W & N describe it as "Artists' Canvas Board". I couldn't find this product on your website - instead I found a W & N product called "Winsor & Newton Canvas Panels". "Is a canvas panel the same as a canvas board" I thought. Perhaps not? Also I wanted "Artists" quality, not students. So the absence of the word "artists" and "Panel" instead of "Board". Gave some uncertainty. You might not agree, but W & N for example used to do "students" quality items and "artists" quality items. Hence I phoned you up and you assured me that they were the "Artists" quality. If you had given the 'exact' W & N description, I would have been able to identity these without any question. Sorry to be a pain.

A good product at a very reasonable price.
